5th GREEN SCHOOLS FLAG AWARDED
Congratulations to the Greenschools committee and all at St Leonard’s NS who were awarded their 5th Green Flag for Biodiversity.
Mrs Langton and Some of the committee accepting the 5th Green Flag.
Three of the Committee went with Mrs Langton to Hotel Kilkenny to accept their flag.
We hope to raise our new Flag on Monday, June 24th, as part of our League Finals night.
We are working towards our 5th Green Flag, Biodiversity.
Our Committee comprises of students from 1st – 6th classes and is co-ordinated by Mrs Langton. The committee meet once a month on a Friday afternoon.

Biodiversity is nature all around us. It is all forms of life from the smallest bug or plant to the largest mammal. It gives us food, medicine, shelter, fuel, air, water etc. We need to protect our environment and to take of it. In St Leonard’s we love nature. We try our best not to litter, we reduce our waste, we recycle & reuse materials as much as we can.
Our Green-Code:
“It’s Our Duty To Protect Nature’s Beauty”.
We ran a competition within all the classes to pick a slogan/code that represents our school’s commitment to Biodiversity.
We had four class categories and one overall winner; who were 6th class girls Louisa, Ava-Lily, CaitlIn & Emily.
Farmer Pat Visit.
Local farmer, Pat Holden came to visit us and tell us all about spring on the farm. John and William helped their Dad tell us all about how busy it is on their farm and all the jobs they need to do to keep the new calves fed, the cows milked and the grass fertilised.
Pat even brought in calves for us to pet and feed. The twins had just been born that morning – and yet were so sturdy on their feet. Pat was looking for suggestions for their names… Mary Poppins, Lady Gaga and Leonara were all in the running. Thanks to Pat for such an informative visit – I think we have a lot of budding farmers in Dunnamaggin.

Biodiversity Action Day
Last week, the entire school took part in an action day as part of our Green flag work on Biodiversity. Our class planted summer flowering bulbs outside. We had great fun and loved putting our wellies on and getting our hands dirty. We will keep an eye on our bulbs and hope that they grow. We wrote about what we did and also made some predictions about what our flowers will hopefully look like. We learned a poem called “A Little Seed” and also read “Jasper’s Beanstalk” by Nick Butterworth.
