Welcome to our dedicated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) page.

We are very proud to have received our 8th SFI (Science Foundation, Ireland) Curious Minds Gold Award. We think our pupils really deserve the award for their great work during the year.

STEP 1: SCIENCE

1. Investigation: Materials: Materials + Change / Integrated with Maths

2nd and 3rd class investigated which material kept the water warm for longer. The results were both interesting and conclusive.

STEP 2 MATERIALS: Materials and Change

Senior Infants and 1st class investigated what made “Gummy Bears” grow? They put the “test dummy” bears into various liquids and compared how and if the bears grew.

Milk and vinegar seemed to be the “magic” ingredient as the bears in these two liquids all grew impressively.

STEP 3. ENERGY AND FORCE: Transport an egg down the Zip Line

Mrs Langton’s class had to design a harness to and discover various materials to transport the egg safely but quickly down the zipline. We discussed friction – using smooth materials rather than rough, safety – that the egg would land safely and finally speed of the zipline.

STEP 4. ENERGY & FORCES: Demonstrating Static Electricity

5th & 6th Class were set a challenge to see how many times their square of paper could move in a 360 degree motion – using static electricity to move.

Challenge 2: Using Static Electricity can you make your scraps of paper jump?
