Cycle Right Stage 1 – Cycling Safety Programme for 5th & 6th Class
Our 5th and 6th class pupils is taking part in the Cycle Right Stage 1 Cycling Safety Programme, delivered by South East Cycling Safety. This nationally recognised programme is aligned with Cycle Right, the national standard for cycling safety training in Ireland, and is supported by Cycling Ireland, the RSA and An Taisce.
This initiative forms part of our Green-Schools Travel theme, encouraging active, sustainable travel while helping pupils develop the skills and confidence to cycle safely. It also links directly with the PE curriculum, specifically the Outdoor and Adventure strand, promoting physical activity, independence and real-life skills.
The course consists of six 80-minute lessons delivered during the school day. Pupils will learn about:
Safe cycling equipment
Rules of the road
Starting, stopping and road positioning
Shoulder checking and signalling
Changing direction (left and right turns)
Overtaking
Practical on-road skills (where appropriate)
The programme equips children with essential road safety awareness, whether they cycle regularly or only occasionally, and encourages lifelong healthy habits through active travel.
We are delighted to offer this valuable opportunity to our senior pupils as part of our ongoing commitment to wellbeing, safety and sustainability. 🚲🌱
