St. Leonard's National School, Dunnamaggin

Tree Week was celebrated in St Leonard's with lots of activities. Class took part in an excellent Tree Week Quiz. 3rd class went on a Tree Spotting walk and Pascal planted some new saplings in the school garden. A Tree-iffuc Week!

Bhí cheolchoirm againn innú ar scoil do Seachtain na Gaeilge. Bhí gach éinne gléasta í glas agus rinne na ranganna an damhsa "Droichead Átha Luain" agus chan siad Amhráin na bhFiann agus Óro Sé do Bheatha Abhaile. Rinne gach rang dán nó amhráin comh maith. Bhí an craic agus sport againn.

3rd class took part in Dream Space Live as part of Engineers Week. They engaged in STEM and Coding activities and even created their own voting programme.

3rd class are learning about the Vikings in history. They did projects; which included PowerPoint presentations, photos, the Norse alphabet, Viking gods, made longhouse, made shields and weapons. The other classes came in to find out all about the Vikings from 3rd class.

3rd Class celebrated St Valentine's Day by practising their MFL; French in a romantic setting as they enjoyed, le croissant, le pain du chocolate et le gateaux in our petit boulangerie in Dunnamaggin. Bon appetit!

3rd class have been working on length this week. They used wool to measure how tall they are. They made paper skeletons, measuring a member of their group and assembling the "life size" skeleton onto black paper. The did Target boards and also worked on Any Three Items. They measured how far they could run in 1 second and again in 2 seconds and also howfar they could jump. A "long" week!!

We are reading about Tom Crean, Ice Man and learning about the Antarctica. We researched Arctic animals and how they are adapted to living in these extreme conditions. We investigated how blubber acts as an insulator. We set up an experiment "a blubber glove" that mimics the blubber that insulates some animals from ice cold water.

3rd class created St Brigid's Day art depicting her two most famous stories; St Brigid's cloak and St Brigid's cross. Using fabric and matchsticks they created both to remember Brigid and thank her for Monday off school!!

Last Thursday, 3rd Class had a fantastic day at the Stripe Primary Young Scientist Exhibition in the RDS, Dublin, where they proudly presented their project titled “Food Detectives – What’s in Our Food?”. Through their project, the pupils explored what is really in the food we eat every day. They carried out a range of engaging experiments, including investigating which foods deteriorate fastest, examining grease spots to identify hidden fats, observing mould growth on differ

Duck!! You could get hit! 3rd class have a snowball fight with their catapults!

Congratulations to all the children on a truly wonderful Christmas concert today. The pupils brought the Christmas Story to life beautifully in the church, creating a very special and memorable occasion for everyone present. Ms O’Keeffe’s class set the tone with lovely tin whistle music, while our 5th and 6th class pupils confidently narrated the story. 2nd class did a fantastic job acting out the Nativity, with wonderful performances from Mary, Joseph, the angels, shepherds

3rd Class designed and built catapults! They then tested their catapults by "throwing" pom poms and marshmallows. We tested their launching abilities in the hall, both on the ground (flat) and standing (tilted). We then had a "snowball fight".

Santa Claus arrived into school on Monday with his reindeer and elf on tow! The excitement was electric! Santa confirmed thst all the boys and girls in Dunnamaggin are on the 'Nice List" and just asked that they leave a carrot out for Rudolph. Merry Christmas Santa and safe travels next week. Many thanks to the Parents Association for providing selection boxes for all the children. All proceeds from the festive visit are going towards Crumlin Children's hospital.

3rd class enjoyed some hot chocolate and cookies last Friday. They wore their Christmas jumpers and some even brought in their slippers. A very festive feel to the Late Late Toy Show Friday.

3rd Class have been very busy learning about various foods and how to read food tables and nutritional information. They put labels/ foods into groups and then put the foods in each category into healthiest to unhealthiest. It was amazing what they discovered and they were shocked themselves as to what they considered healthy!!

Many thanks to Michelle Culloty for a wonderful, engaging and interesting Maths quiz. Lots of maths talk, estimation and fun was had.

On Thursday we had a very exciting visitor; local author TJ Reid came to talk to our classes about his books and how he became an author. He read a chapter from his book, "Demon Wars" and we brought his just published new book also. Lots of questions, lots of interest and lots of inspiration to start writing stories and books ensued. Many thanks to TJ for coming to talk to us.

Over the past few months, 3rd class have been busy thinking, questioning, sketching and building as part of the STEPS Engineering Project . Five enthusiastic teams took on the challenge of designing something that could make life easier, safer, or more fun. Their ideas were wonderfully creative — from Pet Entertainers  to keep animals active, a Bright Bin  to help with tidy classrooms, a Toasty Blanket  for cosy winter days, a Solar-Powered Car  for a greener future, and a cl

3rd class added some music to their poem "On the Ning Nang Nong" by Spike Milligan. The result was very noisy!
