St. Leonard's National School, Dunnamaggin

4th and 5th class worked as civil engineers this week. They learned about different types of bridges and the support structures involved. They worked in groups to construct their own bridge and then tested its weight bearing capability.

3rd class took part in Dream Space Live as part of Engineers Week. They engaged in STEM and Coding activities and even created their own voting programme.

3rd class have been working on length this week. They used wool to measure how tall they are. They made paper skeletons, measuring a member of their group and assembling the "life size" skeleton onto black paper. The did Target boards and also worked on Any Three Items. They measured how far they could run in 1 second and again in 2 seconds and also howfar they could jump. A "long" week!!

We are reading about Tom Crean, Ice Man and learning about the Antarctica. We researched Arctic animals and how they are adapted to living in these extreme conditions. We investigated how blubber acts as an insulator. We set up an experiment "a blubber glove" that mimics the blubber that insulates some animals from ice cold water.

Last Thursday, 3rd Class had a fantastic day at the Stripe Primary Young Scientist Exhibition in the RDS, Dublin, where they proudly presented their project titled “Food Detectives – What’s in Our Food?”. Through their project, the pupils explored what is really in the food we eat every day. They carried out a range of engaging experiments, including investigating which foods deteriorate fastest, examining grease spots to identify hidden fats, observing mould growth on differ

Duck!! You could get hit! 3rd class have a snowball fight with their catapults!

3rd Class designed and built catapults! They then tested their catapults by "throwing" pom poms and marshmallows. We tested their launching abilities in the hall, both on the ground (flat) and standing (tilted). We then had a "snowball fight".

3rd Class have been very busy learning about various foods and how to read food tables and nutritional information. They put labels/ foods into groups and then put the foods in each category into healthiest to unhealthiest. It was amazing what they discovered and they were shocked themselves as to what they considered healthy!!

Over the past few months, 3rd class have been busy thinking, questioning, sketching and building as part of the STEPS Engineering Project . Five enthusiastic teams took on the challenge of designing something that could make life easier, safer, or more fun. On Thursday, Mrs Langton and Mrs Croke's classes set off on an exciting Science Week adventure. Our first stop was Dunmore Caves , where we enjoyed a guided tour deep underground. We saw impressive stalagmites and stalactites, and learned about the 700 bats  that live there. We also discovered that Viking remains had once been found in the caves, adding a fascinating historical twist to the visit. 4th and 5th Class visited 3rd class during Maths Week to "test" their Maths Eyes and check their maths skills!

3rd class are working on their Maths Eyes. They took a photo of someat home that showed Maths and made up 3 questions based on their photo. We are having great fun finding out the answers!

It's Maths Week in St Leonard's!! To celebrate, we had Maths Hour on Tuesday. 5th and 6th class set up the stations which included; Target Number, Shape Builders, Estimation Station, Ipads, Measures, Dice throw and more. Lots of learning and fun was had.

As part of our STEAM we had the task of creating the longest paper chain using only 1 piece of paper. The results were staggering!
